“If you are not restrained from taking beef, the following entry may suit you just fine. Otherwise, stay tuned for more upcoming posts.”

This is yet another Desmond-t’s hot favourite in his list of Penang food. It is so nice that you gotta go eat ‘em twice, thrice… and so on! Yes, it is the Beef Wan Than Mee, also known as “Gu Bak Mee” in Hokkien or just “Ngau Lam Meen” in Cantonese.

Location? Simple. If you are a tourist in Penang, I bet you would miss the taste of the true Penang colours in Chulia Street, right? It is pretty simple to locate this stall. Just right at the corner of the intersection between Chuliat Street and Carnavon Street, there is this old skool kopi tiam named Sai Lam Cafe… and you are right on the spot already!

This cozy cafe has very tables and is usually a packed scene especially during lunch hours. It is open for business for lunch hours till late lunch. Sometimes, you might even spot it is still open at around 7pm.

Being a beef lover myself, I can’t help but to check it out when I frist came to this cafe many years back. Things never change. The sultry taste remains the same. Yummy!

Here you go, the ultimate soupy Beef Wan Than Mee. They cooked the beef to perfection, very much without the usual “beefy” smell you would taste, especially in the soup. Plus the chilli sauce to top it up, it is pure indulgence of local delicacy to the max.

Look at the texture of the beef. WhoAAAA!!!

If you are not a beef lover like my mom, you can opt for the ordinary Wan Than Mee, which includes the original Wan Than, of course.  Not bad after all, just that I bet you can find this type of noodle pretty much everywhere in Penang.

Pricing list? Here you go.

Looking for side dishes? I’d just plainly suggest you to try the Mee Goreng Mamak which is just beside the road side of the kopi tiam. The serving is so small that I considered it to be a side dish, LOL. Surprisingly, it tastes good as well, though nothing beats the Gurney’s Edgecumbe Road Mee Goreng.

… and that’s it. Yet another tantalizing delicacy brought to you by Desmond-t.com
