It was another long weekend as the Thaipusam holiday was celebrated in most states across the nation. Desmond-t took this opportunity for a short adventure in Pulau Ketam, a must-go island in West Malaysia if you were to experience nice and cheap seafood delicacies. As you might have noticed earlier, this is a food cum going places entry. I shall begin with the glutinous one first, then only our jalan-jalan trip around the island (although I did it the other way round during my actual trip).

Before we go any further, let me share with you my overall food experience:
Pulau Ketam’s seafood totally dominated Kuala Selangor’s seafood without any doubt. The following is the reason why I was so attracted and in love with the seafood there.

The first snack I had was ultimately the best - The La La Chien (Omelette  with La La). Frankly, there’s a lot of stalls selling this Oyster Omellete and “La La Chien”. At list 5 stalls on the main street itself.

Which one is the best? Based on my observation and doing some analytics (LOL) on these stalls, we found this local delicacy was so commercialized, even some Indonesian maids have their own hawker stall selling these! I was fascinated by this stall with the tag of “La La Kuih”.

You must be wondering why is this stall so special, right? Hmm, first instinct when you want to know whether the stall sells good food is purely based on the number of customers, undoubtedly right? This stall certainly fulfilled my criteria.

Passed level 1 certification.

The next thing to look out is that the skill of the chef itself. By judging the way the chef prepares his/her food. This stall blowed my mind away when I saw she had THREE separate flat frying pans just to cook a plate of omelette!

Why need until THREE frying pans when you only need one to prepare an omelette? Here lies the secret of the art of frying an omelette. Each an every pan has their specific usage and most of all has their specific level of pan temperature. So masterful that the chef takes care of every single little detail that produce the ultimate masterpiece of La La Kuih!

RM10 for a plate of La La Chien for 5 pax - Something that you cannot find, even in Penang.

Next, the seafood paradise. This time I was in such a hurry because I need to catch the last boat at 6pm. It was already 5.15pm when I finished the La La Chien!. The worst experience would be: Going to Pulau Ketam without eating Ketam! No choice, I’ll have to give the crabs and fish a miss this time around.

Again, I simply select the restaurant with the most people dining there. No time wasted, simple seafood to fill my stomach is better than missing the last boat ride and stranded in the island.

The Deep Fried Sotong, a very ordinary but generous portion.

The Bamboo Shell a.k.a “Chok Than”. Special because I never tried such a gigantic “Chok Than” in my life! Look at the size!

Sweet & Sour Mantis Prawns - Another nice and tasty choice in a big serving.

Fried Butter Prawns - Fresh succulent prawns fried to perfection.

Overall, the bill came to be RM77 which was justified and fairly a good price considering the generous serving and freshness.

That roughly sums up my food hunting adventure and let’s move on to a little time off around the island.

Getting there is pretty easy. Just take KTM to the last station at Port Klang and the jetty to Pulau Ketam is just meters away. Driving to the jetty is also pretty straight forward with road signage shown pretty clear all the way from Federal Highway to Port Klang.

The boat ride takes 30 minutes and it costs RM7 per person, one way. Nice ride in a fully air-conditioned long boat which can fit up to 60 passengers at once. Boat departure punctuality - Malaysian standard: “It depends!” LOL

A few things I’d like to highlight about Pulau Ketam:

1. I’ve never seen any motorcycle nor any cars there. Just bicycle.

2. The roads are narrow - walkway and cycling path.

3. The island is extremely dirty if you look into the mud underneath the houses.
4. There’s no proper sewage or piping system. If you were to release anything in the toilet, it goes directly into the sea!

Nothing much in the island. Just merely a fishing village and a peaceful place to be. Oh ya, they’ve got an old foosball table made with wood with metallic foosmen and bars!

God, I miss foosball! Snake, push shots, pull shots, 5-men shots, double fakey, tic-tac kicks… foosball please!

p/s: Desmond-t wishes every love birds Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Cut-Throat Day for florists and other businessmen. Gosh, it’s simply too commercialized!
