So so so… The moment you guys have been waiting for - a brief comparison from the food lover himself. Before I begin, I shall mention that I am not being paid nor biased for the following review and everything is purely from my personal discretion. Everyone has his/her own tastebuds and they do not necessarily match with the author’s decription later. Feel, eat and indulge for yourself so that you can have your very own satisfaction.
Behold! Lots of photos…
It has been the talk of the town for a few months ever since the rise of the new competitors in the field of Japanese Buffet. First, the ever famous one in Starhill - Jogoya, a Taiwan based restaurant which serves premium range of food, has been dominating the market for sometime.
Then comes Tenji in Solaris, SOHO KL. With a theme of Gourmet Sensation, they bid to get a piece of the demanding KL food market with irresistable promotions. So irresistable that Desmond-t felt sorry to himself for months since he failed so many times to get a reservation.
Now, the freaking Japanese Buffet market is even expanding. I’ve heard of this new place called Yaki Yaki in the heart of KL City as well with temptuous 50% promotion. Previous month, I also heard of d’Xenri Buffet with their discount packages too. Ah… you can never have it all!
Let’s begin with the intention of getting there. The new Tenji is so new that everyone wants to get a bite overthere. You can call 1700 80 1818 for the whole day with nobody picking up the line and your call be directed to the automated voice mail. That’s what happened to me during their first promo period, the RM29.90 lunch promo. I never manage to get there. But now, I guess the demand has slowed down and at last I managed to get myself a supper promo package at RM39.90++. Yes, now they have SMS reservation too! Just SMS: RSVP<NAME><DATE><TIME><PAX> to 016-9201899 to reserve your seat.
Jogoya? They have surprise promotions too. I personally been there for a few times already. But I have never faced any problems booking for a table. Dial 03-21421268 and you will get yourself a nice seat already. I am not sure if during the hectic promotion period. But I do remember once when I got there with 50% discount for the ladies and King Prawns for the Gents package. Crowd = normal. Maybe they have promotions going on and on, that people streaming at a constant rate, you don’t have to endure long queue and eating stress disorder.
Pricing? Tenji is currently running this all week Supper Promo (RM39.90++) and weekdays Lunch Promo (RM49.90) for March. Jogoya is having the Buy 2 Free 1 Promo for any dining period from 10th till 31st March 2009.
Some food from Tenji:

Rightaway, we’re off to the Barbecue Station. They have this succulent scallop with capsicum and fishball.
How about some fresh-cut steak? You can choose which part of meat you like most.
Premium array of sushi… it’s actually a very unpleasant sight when you see tables around you where people tend to remove the “rice” from the sushi, only eating the prawns and unagi, etc…
This is my favourite - fresh humongous oysters. How FRESH was it?
So fresh that it is directly scraped from the oyster shells directly from this bucket before being served. Now you understand why the queue can be so long… of about 20-30 ppl lining up at one time!
Scallops and more scallops!!! Beside those scallops are the orangish jelly fish. It’s only up for a few seconds on the tray, and within a glimsp of an eye, *POOF* all gone!
Gigantic squid are also up for grabs.
I had so many fragrant coconuts that my friends and I started to make this volcano-alike arrangement. Well, I must say the waiters are way too busy to clear our table. The downside of this is… at Tenji, you will have to queue very long for the coconuts, unlike in Jogoya where it is well prepared.
Salmon sashimi - A common sight at Japanese buffet.
The kitchen simply has no time to decorate the ever-demanding Tempura. Nah, just grab and eat, would ‘ya?
Some food from Jogoya:
Shishamo… I’m not sure if I happen to see one at Tenji… maybe again sudah disapu habis?
Jogoya arguably got the best selection of crabs! In Tenji, I’ve only seen 2-3 types, but in Jogoya, you can even request the chef to cook your favourite crab dishes!
Plus the soft shell crabs are well decorated, very well standardized procedure. At Tenji, they just… bring it to your table, undecorated and macam seketul aje…but heck, they taste just as nice! It’s about quality of food and presentation afterall.
I must say Jogoya has a better selection of customly prepared food. You can really interact with the chefs whom are always at your service. Not at Tenji, their chefs are way too busy.
You can never find any cheese baked crab in Tenji, do you? Maybe not during the promo period? I’m not sure though.
Both Jogoya and Tenji serves the premium Haagen Dazs ice cream and fragrant coconuts. But seriously the queue at Tenji is disturbing. The Haagen Dazs can really dry up at Tenji, LOL.
If you’d notice, I gave a big pass to other selection of food like vegetables, rice, noodles, chickens and other “ordinary” food. I would prefer to just highlight the main attraction of the restaurant, just to make things simple. You don’t go to buffet and eat fried rice, do you? LOL
My judgement?
Food selection - Jogoya offers a better and wider range of food without any doubt. Tenji has a rather limited selection and worse is when they fail to replenish the food fast enough for the gluttons. I can tell in a frank manner that there are many food that I can find in Jogoya but not in Tenji. HOWEVER, Tenji do serve some fresh seafood - so fresh that I can personally say that it is comparable to the ones sold in The Fisherman’s Wharf in Sydney! The oysters are way too cool and it’s a real pity if one does not savour any of those. (like a friend of mine who made an analogy of an oyster with 20 men’s bukkake, LOL)
Pricing - I personally don’t know what the food will be if I pay the retail price at Tenji, but the promo thingy is definitely the sole driving force for me being there. If it’s not for the promo, I don’t think I would get there again. Paying RM88++ for Japanese Buffet with rather a limited choice does not seem ideal. Same goes to Jogoya, although I slightly rate it higher. With a promotion going on, I’m sure Jogoya will reward you with a better value for money.
Ambience - Thumbs up for Tenji. They truly designed the place well and decorated them very well. They have a rather packed arrangement in the interior part, just like Jogoya. Or you can select the spacious and cozy open air ambience with chilly breeze (if you’re lucky) ahaaa… Jogoya? They have nice array of food at each corner, but the tables are just everywhere and they come with lousy cemented floor LOL.
Service - I don’t really see an obvious difference between the two. Some might say about the deteriorating services at Tenji, but I think it is understandable considering the enormous crowd during the promo periods. Jogoya? They’re awesome, right from the telephone reservation till the moment you leave the restaurant.
Overall, I’d say Tenji is much over-rated. If it’s not for the RM49 nett (yes, the taxes rounded up to 22% !), I don’t see myself there again. Jogoya? I’m sure their promo period is not as packed as Tenji. At least you can eat with ease, without enduring enormously long queues.
That’s what I got to say. What say you?
*pics from Tenji were taken using Canon 1000D while Jogoya ones were taken by my old Canon IXUS40 back then… clear difference? LOL

i just visited TENJi today..
oh god.. it was so packed although i went for supper buffet…
even be4 9,30 pm, the entrance was packed with people..
people are pushing in to make sure they got their food and to spend the 3 hours to the maximum..
they have really poor management and it showed how hard for us to get food even though you got money..
i must say the design of the place is elegance..
the choice of foods offered are plenty..
took 4 fresh oysters.. with squeezed lime..
took 3 coconuts..
the foods are okay..
srvice also okay as they bring your order right to your table..
the staff considered efficient enough in clearing up the used plates..
however.. it was really too many people..
queue for sashimi but then overcrowded and left with nothing
need to wait another round..
haagen daz is superb BUT overcrowd again..
i took once and then reluctant to go for the long queue again..
the desserts were excellent ranging from jelly, cakes, sweet foods and everything nice.. BUT you would want to eat much as it can be very full..
the cooked food.. i din touch at all… well, aren;t you going to eat expensive food than eating normal vegetables or fried stuffs?
overall.. good but then i somehow do not have the big appetite for the day…perhaps its too late..and too long queue
i enjoyted the session..
i must say the price of rm39.90 rounding up to 51.30 after tax is WORTH to go..
if it is the normal price of 88 for supper, i suggest you not to go as the choices offered are worth at that price only not more than that.. 88 is just too much.. better go jogoya.. even though i never been there yet..

yes, many have said Tenji is over-rated. Personally, I’ve not been to both restaurants, but am looking at reviews to decide where to try it out first. I think the hoo-haa will be at Tenji at the moment since its new and Malaysians tend to go crazy over something new (e.g. big apple and J Co). Give it some time maybe the services in Tenji will be better.

Shit. I didn’t see the scallops anywhere in Tenji and the soft-shell crabs tasted like bloody KFC lah. I’ve never been to Jogoya but even with RM49.90 a pop, I don’t think I’ll every go to Tenji again. In fact, no more buffets for me til Labour Day.
Finally, the long awaited super post!
Be right back to read later, need a nap first. haha

I’ve neither been to both places but I heard Tenji is over-rated.
pikey’s last blog post..Thanks for the Memories
I been to Tenji and not Jogoya.. Frankly speaking.. Tenji really over-rated.. as its stated clearly as Japanese Buffet.. So I think its really a limited choice for Japanese foods selection… Really disappointed on it..
I think I can’t eat most of the food in both Jogoya and Tenji…

Kwong Fei: Thanks for your detailed comment. Really appreciate it. I can come with a conclusion that the LONG QUEUE was really frustrating, right? It simply spoil our mood and killed our time.
CWKen: Let’s have some hope for both Tenji and Jogoya… plenty of room for improvement for sure!
Regina: Hahahahaha… See you here reminds me of the bukkake again LOL…
Jason L.: Eh, bro… next time got any feast… drop me a line!
Pikey: Hmm… why not try it for yourself? Do let me know when you tried and blogged about it!
Wan Wan: I couldn’t agree more with you… really depreciated of Japanese food selection.
Abby: Ouch… the allergy is spoiling it for you again… Nvm, next time we find other food, then sure include you in the list!
To All: Eh? This is not anti-Tenji nor anti-Jogoya post ya! Hehehe just kidding… I’m so glad to have received all your honest opinions. Let’s go and eat out again and share our experience with the blogosphere!
Hmm, u guys nvr wondered? Pls be warned that they charge 15% tax not on the ORIGINAL price (39.90 or 49.90) but u r paying taxes on Original price. this works out to be 33% of tax paid on 39.90 (for supper price). Such high tax charged. Worth it??
been to both places, thought they are both over-rated to certain extend, i do prefer Tenji as it is more japanese, where as Jogoya is more of fusion of food.

I say Jogoya. Much more variety and goo service makes customer like me happy too.
No doubt will be going back..
went to Tenji for supper at rm39.90. Given a table at smoking area which i hated. Don’t know where the heafty tax on price goes to. Food quality not as good as expected, especially steam grouper i order, taste like it’s been frozen for years. The icecream is too hard frozen that a lady took more than 3 minutes to fill her cup with long q behind her. Personally, i like their cake section for its wide sellection. May go again if there is a promotion.
went to Jogoya where it was 50% for ladies and men’s it’s the big prawn…. I didn’t make a booking, so it was a long queue coz it’s the last day of the promotion (if i’m not mistaken). So we were put on waiting list. We were also quite worried that we couldn’t get a place as the place was surrounded with loads of ppl. However, we got the place at last n happily went in. wondering what will happen to the rest of the waiting list ppl.
Actually i feel its like a gimic. everyone went in and there’s like still ample of places left! Made us worried for nothing. Even planned to go to the sushi place below. But i find some of their stuffs nice only. especially the Japanese area. other than that, not worth eating. But if u r a crabs lover, there are variety of choices.
Still thinking of heading to TENJI but looking at the ratings, i guess i’ll turn back to JOGOYA.

seriously, tenji is well over-rated. i’ve been to both, and yes, Jogoya is better, even if i have to pay for the full price.
kwong fei: thanks for your comment. appreciate that! great minds think alike.
cwken: gotta try it dude…. then u’ll know from your tastebuds.
regina: i think all habis disapu adee…gotta act faster next round heheheee
jason: bila mau pi lagi?
pikey: gotta go and try for yourself…. hehe be ur own judge
mun teng: ah… seafood! too bad
wanwan: disappointed? hehe at least not so bad if got promo, rite?
good comparison. i tried Jogoya b4 and not yet Tenji and i was wondering, which was better. Now, i had a clearer pic.. however, no Tenji no more promotion rite?
Hey, I’m thrilled I added your blog to my favorites, otherwise I would have missed this. Good post, and happy 2010 to you.
