I’m kicking off with the new series of PJ Food Guide, after 4 years of food hunting as a student from University of Malaya. With this, I hope the new batch of students would have a greater picture of food around UM and PJ itself. On the other hand, to those who wish to hunt something light to fill your tummy or eating out in PJ, you are at the right post.

So, where is cheap and affordable to eat? That is for sure a common yet top priority question for students (well, at least for me!), although I know students nowadays like to go to fast food outlets or even restaurants even for an ordinary meal. Lavish… but not me.

First stop, Chuan Lee Restaurant, Jalan Bukit 11/2. The best way to describe the location is of course the same road down the hill at University Towers (UT). As you go down hill, the last shop on the row of shop houses on your left is the exact destination. Usually packed during lunch hours, it is a ideal location for students and working class people. Cheap hawker food with reasonably big portion can satisfy your gluttony at least for lunch.

They have this Nasi Lemak stall by the old couple which gives special rates for students. A normal plate of Nasi Lemak Ayam is RM4.50 but for students, it’s just RM3.00… you better believe it. Furthermore, you can request for additional rice at absolutely no cost. I have the utmost respect for the couple who treat we students just like their kids. Well, the nasi lemak usually sold out by 1.30pm, so you gotta hurry up!

Besides, there is this Char Koay Teow stall with a ferocious uncle’s one man show. He single handedly cook and serve a quite special fried koay teow, nice especially for those who like extra spicy plate of Koay Teow. RM4.00 for small plate and RM4.50 for large.

Next stop, Seapark Nasi Lemak otherwise known as PJ Ibumie for dinner. This shop is just within walking distance from the Flying Wan Than Mee stall. By far, they have the best Nasi Lemak Ayam in town, no doubt about that. You can see the mass production of ayam goreng and telur mata kerbau at its glory with almost every table at each corner will order at least one plate of nasi lemak ayam or Ibumie Goreng. Why it tastes so nice? Typical. Ayam already goreng’ed to perfection, eggs are fried to perfection, nasi lemak is steamed to perfection, sambal with ikan bilis not too sweet nor too spicy. What other perfections you would fancy? LOL but caution, the place is a lil filthy though, after all, it’s 100% mamak stall by the roadside.

Oh ya! I almost miss out this very special stall. Located at exactly the same spot at the Flying Wan Than Mee stall, another stall operates at a different time. It’s also wan than mee, but they are famous for their Curry Wan Than Mee. Their business begins at around 3.30am or 4am and finishes around 8am. Nothing much to describe about this stall except the fact that this is one of the few nice place to have a bowl of noodle in the middle of the night!

Azimuddin Char Koay Teow at LRT Station Universiti is another drop off point. Located just by the roadside about 50 meters away from the LRT Station, you can see a line of tables and chairs beside a lorry which caters Koay Teow Goreng Basah. It is really soaking wet and this is what makes this stall so special. Never fail to attract a passer-by crowd, the place is always packed till late night.

Alritey, that’s about it for now… Stay tuned for Part II coming soon.
